Gauge Your Health with a Diabetes Test
By Tony Collins

Millions of people around the world today have symptoms of diabetes, if they don't already have it. A simple test is crucial, especially for those who may be at risk of developing diabetes. Currently, there are two tests that can be used to assess how much glucose (sugar) there is in the bloodstream, but the more common or preferred one is one referred to as fasting plasma glucose test. In this one the patient's blood sugar level is tested after having fasted for several hours. This is not to be used for diagnosing the disease, however.

Carrying out blood glucose tests at home gives people results at a particular time. The amount of sugar in the blood tends to change throughout the day, especially after meals. The fasting plasma glucose one can be used to measure blood sugar levels for up to three months. The doctor can then look at the results and evaluate them and make a more accurate diagnosis.

If the results of this tend to be between 80 and 110 mg/dL, the blood sugar levels are considered normal. However, people whose blood sugar level are consistently between 110 and 125 mg/dL are considered at risk of developing the disease. Those whose results are over 125 are considered diabetics.

If you are going to undergo a fasting plasma glucose test, it is vital that you follow directions on administering it so that you get an accurate result. Be aware that there are certain foods that can get into the bloodstream more quickly than the others, so if you eat or drink these types of foods, it can skew the results. Thus, you must not take any food for several hours prior to doing one. Getting accurate blood sugar levels is important because this will help your doctor determine what kind of medication to prescribe.

Adult onset or type 2 diabetes is the most common type. This condition is typically controlled with oral medication. People with type 2 are able to produce insulin but the cell tissues are unable to effectively use the insulin for breaking down glucose and converting it into energy. As a result, the glucose remains in the bloodstream. By taking a test, diabetics can get the proper treatment.

Other symptoms of the condition include constant fatigue, frequent urination, constant thirst and blurred vision. People who have a history of diabetes in their family are often ordered by their doctors to have an examination.
