Omega 3 Fatty Acids And Their Role In Protecting Kids From Diabetes
By John Collins

Everybody knows the benefits of omega 3 essential fatty acids on human health and that westerners are known to have lower than necessary concentrations of essential fats in their blood. However, omega 3 fatty acids also protect children from a long series of medical issues, such as diabetes, brain problems and cardio vascular conditions. After many studies performed over the years, researchers concluded that a diet rich in fish and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids helps cut the risk that children with a family history of diabetes would develop this disease.

This study has appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association. People are encouraged to visit their doctor to find out how they can protect their children's health by assuring them a proper amount of omega 3 fatty acids. The type 1 diabetes, also called juvenile diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes discovered in children. Juvenile diabetes occurs when the immune system goes out of control and starts attacking insulin-producing cells found in the pancreas. While no one knows for sure what triggers this abnormal process, but medics blame heredity and environmental factors to play a role.

Several studies in animals have shownthat omega 3 fatty acids - which are found in great amounts in fish, flaxseed oil, walnuts, soybeans and other foods - may help protect developing children from suffering from juvenile diabetes. The University of Colorado performed a study on 1, 770 children between 1994 and 2006 who were deemed at high risk for diabetes. Researchers found that children in the test who ate a lot of foods rich in omega-3 were a lot less likely to develop islet autoimmunity - antibodies against the cells in the pancreas that precede full-blown diabetes than children who lacked a rich omega 3 diet.

This is only a first step in discovering how these essential fatty acids protect the human body from many medical conditions, but it is an important step nonetheless, as it shows that what was once considered an incurable disease - juvenile diabetes - can now be prevented by simply increasing the amount of omega 3 rich food in the children's diet. The medic will tell you if you have to increase the fish consumed by the kid or if he needs to be prescribed omega 3 dietary supplements. The Omega 3 fatty acids are vital to the proper functioning of the human body.
